Normalization of Evil – Yongshin Cho

2020 Solo Exhibition

The Riverside Gallery presents an exhibition of works by Yongshin Cho from October 21st to 30th, 2020.

In this special exhibition titled, “Normalization of Evil,” Cho depicts the world leaders with overlapping newspaper collages on 50 different works, each a panel, sized 9 x 11.5 inch. Through these works, Cho explores the new norm of the abuse of power and the perpetuation of evil by the world leaders. The phrase was coined by the renowned psychiatrist Robert Jay Lifton, who investigated the Nazi doctors who conducted painful and deadly experiments on the Jewish prisoners in Auschwitz.

These leaders present evil ideas and policies as desirable or “normal” under the guise of order, morality, and patriotism. Surprisingly, the public in the case of Imperial Japan, Nazi Germany, and Fascist Italy have been subservient to their leadership without questioning the evils of a new normal.
