Concept Note

Long before I came up with the concept behind this artwork, I visited an exhibition titled ‘The Wonders of the Human Body”. I saw bodies cut apart, stitched together; posed against their will, stretched and spread apart.

Some people within my own culture were shocked and appalled, and the most common thought was “How could they do such a thing?”. They were horrified and shocked. But I saw something else. I saw a new body. A new life.

Cells, veins, muscle, organs all tied and knotted together–this is what creates and forms humanity. Each piece one by one a work in and of itself, but all together creating something greater than the whole, much like society and the universe, combining the tangible and intangible together.

The shapes of and within the human bodies became my art. The exhibition showed the tangible body; I have done my best to show the intangible. ‘life, death; spirit and mentality; and all the universe throughout all my art’.

Concept Note

I get excited when I go out to work on my art series in the city. Things that would ordinarily be glib and boring try to slide past me, instead my senses sharpen and my eyes jump to look at them. I feel and see the brightest surprise at seeing new things in the places we think don’t change. I catch slightly different things and find myself surprised each time. What beauty I find! The changes and sights caused by the passions of people around me. The life and world encourage me, and give me inspiration making me feel like Van Gogh taking the ordinary and turning it into something amazing. I try to move my eyes to the tiny window on my camera, my finger slipping onto the cold shutter. I feel my pulse race afterwards, and then take a deep breath of the cold air, filling my lungs. I try to calm myself and let some of the emotion escape, and look forward to the picture I have just taken. I take the picture with a heavy weight on my shoulders–it is one of the greater powers to be able to show natural beauty. I give my appreciation and thanks to God, and lie in awe of the unique style I’ve found. I try to make things as good as they can be by channeling my passion and my own style–Time, Place and Instant have all become one in that way. The City series express the flowing of time, and through the concept of the combination of time, and special places. I want to give inspiration with my pictures and hope to create new memories, or bring up people’s own from their past.
