Traces of Memory in Color and Line

Kyung Hoon Min’s paintings express memory, emotion, and inner movement through vivid color, free-flowing lines, and carefully considered open space. Bright primary colors, including hues rooted in Korea’s traditional obangsaek color system, function not simply as decorative elements but as an essential visual language that conveys emotional energy.

Familiar images such as  fish, women, butterflies, and flowers occasionally emerge within his compositions, yet they do not remain fixed as literal representations. Instead, they are transformed through color, line, and gesture into abstract forms that invite memory and imagination.

Central to Min’s work is the relationship between fullness and emptiness. Rather than filling the entire canvas, he concentrates color and line within selected areas while leaving generous passages of open space. These quiet areas allow the painted elements to breathe and provide room for the viewer’s gaze and emotions to enter the work.

Vivid color, spontaneous line, and stillness coexist within the same composition, creating a distinctive balance between intensity and simplicity, movement and silence, fullness and emptiness.

Through the purity of color, the freedom of line, and the expressive power of open space, Kyung Hoon Min has developed a personal language of abstraction. In his paintings, color becomes emotion, line becomes movement, and empty space becomes a place where memory can remain.
